OCEANOGRAPHY OF THE ROSS SEA Scott Base Tide Gauge
Investigator: Rob Bell Organisation: NIWA
The Scott Base Tide gauge was initially established in January 2001 by NIWA and Antarctica NZ to support oceanographic and hazards research (including tsunami) and to support hydrographic surveying. A permanent installation has been established at the reverse osmosis boom at Scott Base. The gauge is a Sutron Accubar based bubbler. This site was chosen as it is an area where there is a small opening in the ice all year round. The gauge is leveled in each year by the US Antarctic Survey team. The installation also measure atmospheric pressure and air temperature.
